Starting a Website
This page helps you the information that you will need when you decide to start a website.
Ponder a name of what you will call your site.
Your name is your Brand, so it will be something that you will want to think of the future of that name.
Get an email just for websites
I would recommend a Gmail account, having it will be easier when you connect your website up to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools, and Google Analytics.
This email account shouldn’t have any personal information in it. It should be part your main brand name or a brand name for all your web designs.
This email account will serve two different tasks.
One, then any Website Builder won't have your information.
Second, when people who visit your site can contact you they don't have any of your personal information.
One thing that you could do is to connect your website email to your personal email. When someone contacts you through your websites email it will send it to your personal email and when you reply it will show up on their email as your websites email. It may sound complicated, but there are tutorials on YouTube.
Set up a Free site first.
There are a lot of Free platforms to choose from. Some of them you will want to use the Free version to see how that platform works, because you don't want to pay for a site and learn while you are paying for it.
It is always best to make a "Test" site in the different platforms. I have had different ones and after I have learned that platform then I deleted that "Test" site, except for my WordPress.com Free version. That one I use just for me, so I made the URL short and simple. It is also a non-searchable site. I have page that I use for web-design where I link different webpages like Tech Lamed, any Login sites (Weebly), all my sites. I also have some pages that are just for me like links for things in my State, movie theaters around my area, ect...
For Free versions I like WordPress.com and Weebly. I have used them both and they are great website builders, so good you may not have to upgrade.
For their Free versions the URL is
(yoursite.weebly.com or yoursite.wordpress.com).
Which isn't a bad URL
When it comes to WordPress there are two different versions.
WordPress.org
is free, but you have to pay for hosting through a hosting company.
WordPress.com
has a Free version with ads and a paid version that doesn't have ads.
Wix Free version is terrible, mainly because of the URL that they give you for the Free version. The only reason that you would do the Free version on Wix is if you were going to test Wix to see if you want to use it for a main site that you are going to pay for.
Squarespace doesn’t have a Free version only a Free trial.
Some web builders it is hard to find and get a Free version, because they don't want to give you a free version.
I used to pay for hosting for a few WordPress.org sites, but when WordPress.com Free version improved their editor I moved all my paid sites to Free sites.
Truly I have come to realize in having a site that you pay for that there are some disadvantages.
Like when paying for your domain name (yoursite.com). You will have to pay for it every year. You think that you own that name (your brand) but you truly don’t, the place where you bought it does. You are only renting the name that you made up. A name that you worked hard for and built up over time and you will have to renew it every year and if you don’t renew it (buying it again) and be sure that the price is going to go up every year. So if you let the name laps and now the place where you bought the name owns it and they will sell it (sell your name, your brand).
So one big advantage to a Free site is that it is free and that URL is free and you don’t have to renew it at all. So that name is is yours for as long as you want.
WordPress is great for a Large website (a site with a lot of pages).
Weebly is great for a smaller site (Fellowship, Gathering, A small Info site).
WordPress.com has more visible ads
Weebly only has a small Weebly self-promotional ad.
WordPress is easy for social media.
Weebly is a little tougher for social media
There are several ways of putting social media icons on your site.
One way is to have an internet service do it.
The other is to set it up yourself by having a small picture of the social media icon on your page and linking that picture with a special sharing link.
Make a folder in your computer called “Web Design”
You want a folder in your computer that has all your information, folders, pictures, word documents, ect.
Make some folders that go inside that Web Design folder
00 My Websites
in this folder you put a folder for each Website that you have
01 Pic Main
in this folder have a few folders
00 Templates (Transparent pics, grids)
Pic Downloads (Stock pics that you downloaded)
It is easier to put numbers in the name of your folder (00).
That will organize and make that folder always appear at the top and so on.
Get a Dropbox account
This is so you can put a backup to your site, your word documents, picture templates and some main logo pictures. Dropbox will give you 5Gb free, so you may not be able to put everything on it.
Have a specific USB Flash drive memory stick.
Have one USB just for websites. It will have all your web information on it, Site backup, word documents, picture templates, stock pictures ect.
Get some good Web Browser Extensions for your computer.
For your main Web Browser that you use for designing websites.
Browser Extensions for Web designers
Become a member and get an account of some good sites so you will have access to their tools
Color-Hex.com
PixaBay.com
Canva.com
Learn a good Picture program.
I would suggest a great online editor called Photopea or Pixlr.
Learn how to layer your images
Learn how to make transparent images because it will help you with your branding when you layer.
